Growth Habit

Leaves

3-6 x 1-2 cm; persistent, leathery; elliptic, oblong-elliptic or ovate; apex variable, mucronate; base most often rounded, sometimes acute; margin cartilaginous, flat or sometimes slightly revolute, entire or most often with 1-4 pairs of mucronate, asymmetrical teeth, often on only one side of the blade; dark greyish green, glabrous and bright above; grey-green whitish below (dense stellate tomentum with 13-20 rays appressed on the surface of the blade, looking like fringed scales), with midrib prominent and hairless; 8-12 slender vein pairs, impressed either above or under the blade; petiole 3-7 mm long, pubescent;

male catkins 2-4 cm, few-flowered; female inflorescence 1-3 cm, with 1 to 3 flowers;

Fruits

acorn conical 1.5 cm long; narrow, pointed; solitary or paired on a 0.5 cm long peduncle; cup scaly, umbrella-like, 1-1.5 cm in diameter, covering 1/4 of the nut; ripening first year;
