Leaves

3-7 cm long, 1-2 cm wide; deciduous; sub-leathery; ovate-lanceolate or sometimes oblong; most often acute at apex, bristle-tipped; base rounded or broadly cuneate; margin plane, thick, entire near base, with 1-3 bristle-tipped teeth near apex; dark green, shiny above, almost glabrous (scattered stellate hairs along midvein and near base); underneath with easily removed, dense, greyish, stellate tomentum, masking a minutely papillose epidermis; 8-10 vein pairs, forked and anastomosing, unconspicuous above and prominent beneath; petiole 4-7 mm long, slender (0.5 mm thick), with persistent greyish tomentum.

male catkins 3 cm long, loose, slightly stellate pubescent; pistillate inflorescence 1-2 flowered on a 5-10 mm long peduncle, 1-2 mm thick, with stellate hairs;

Fruits

acorn 1-2 cm long, ovoid, singly or paired, enclosed 1/3 in the cup; cup obconical with slightly pubescent scales, sometimes glabrous; maturing first year, from August to October;
