Taiwan, 300 to 2500 m;

tree to 15 m tall, trunk to 0.6 m in diameter;

6-8 x 2-2.5 cm; leathery; narrowly oblong to lanceolate; apex caudate to long acuminate; base cuneate; margin serrate in apical half; shiny green adaxially; glaucous chalky beneath, with simple hairs ; 7-9 vein pairs, prominent below; petiole hairless 1-2 cm;

March to May; male flowers with lobes of perianth hairy only on margin; female flowers with enlarged stigmas;

acorn ovoid to ovoid-ellipsoid, 1.2 cm long, 0.9 cm wide; cup thin, enclosing 1/3 of nut, 8-9 mm long, 10-12 mm wide, greyish brown tomentose outside, with 6-8 concentric rings denticulate at rim; scar convex; stylopodium persistent, short; maturing in 1 year from September to November;

not quite hardy; thrives in evergreen broadleaves forests;
