9-20 x 7-10 cm; elliptic to oval; stiff, leathery; apex acute, acuminate, aristate; base rounded, or subcordate; margin thickened, revolute, cartilaginous, crenate or dentate, sometimes entire, with 1-7 pairs of bristle-tips; dark green above, not lustrous, hairless except some short stellate hairs along midvein; yellowish beneath with tomentum made of stellate, short stalked trichomes and golden glandular hairs, becoming nearly glabrous; 10-15 vein pairs, straight, prominent beneath; epidermis papillose; petiole 0.8-1.8 cm long, pinkish, glabrous or pubescent;

February to March; male catkins 8.5 cm long, with numerous flowers ; pistillate flowers 1-2 at tip of a tomentose peduncle less than 1.5 cm long;

acorn 1.5-2 cm long, broadly ovoid; singly or paired; enclosed 1/3 to 1/2 by cup; cup flat, with rim thick and rolled under, with thin, light brown, appressed scales; maturing in 2 years in July-August;
